This was the standard cavalry troop sword during the civil war. Many were captured by confederate counterparts and reused out of necessity, though the duty of this piece is not documented. Original ribbed leather grip and brass wire are still intact. Blade has chop marks, but is in nice original condition otherwise. Right side of hilt is inscribed "1863", "US", J.F. (inspector). Left side is marked "Ames Mfg Co Chicopee, Mass"
